Devon Freewheelers are a team of 37 volunteer Emergency Vehicle drivers who are dedicated to providing a weekday out of hours service (17.00 – 06.00) and 24/7 weekend service supporting the NHS in delivering essential Blood, Samples, Medication and Donor Breast Milk to hospitals throughout Devon.

Exeter City 5k Series – Tuesday 1 August

Tom took part in the August event, this a flat 5k run on footpaths and cycle tracks around Exwick Playing Fields and the River Exe Flood Relief. This series takes part every month, Tom completed in a time 21:03

Straight 8 – Saturday 5 August
Simon and Pat took part in the first running of the ‘Straight 8’ mile run from Starcross to Exeter Quay on Saturday evening.  The event organised by Greenbow Running Club started at Starcross, almost all off-road except for the first mile near Powderham castle before picking up the cycle path past Turf Locks and Double Locks and finished at Exeter Quay. Simon finished in 1:09:51 and Pat in 1:26:45. All runners received a lovely medal and draw string bag.

Totnes 10k – Sunday 6 August
On Sunday seven Coasters took part in the Totnes 10k another sell out field of 600 runners in this Teignbridge Trotters organised race. This multi terrain race runs along parts of the River Dart and Dartington Estate before finishing in Borough Park. Mel B was first Coaster to finish in 45:13 and 4th lady overall  and claiming 1st vet 40 female, Todd was next in 53:13, Eric  54:40, Jan  1:00:18, Les  1:00:27, Julie 1:12:45 and Tryl 1:16:47.  All runners received a bespoke medal.

Salisbury 54321 - Sunday 13 August
Coasters in Salisbury for the’54321’ a brilliant event with something for everyone, runners and walkers alike, with 6 distances to choose from 50k, 42k, 33k, 21k 10k and 5k.  The event is organised by the Fire Service with all proceeds going to the Fire Service Benevolent fund.  Pat took on the 21k while Jan and Eric Foster took on the 10k.  All the routes are off-road and very hilly.  This is must do event, so friendly great atmosphere, brilliant medal and loads of cake, including their famous bread pudding

Race the Train – Saturday 19 August
Coasters on tour again, Simon, Pam amd Pat all ventured off to Wales to take part in the ‘Race the Train’ events, held in the coastal town of Tywyn with runners racing up the valley against the steam Train. After a heavy downpour the day before the course was very wet and muddy.  Pat ran the 3.5 miler and finished in 54mins and claiming 1st in age category, Simon and Pam took on the 5.5 miler with Simon claiming 3rd vet 55 finishing in 43mins, and Pam in 1:20.  All runners received a super medal, T-shirt and goody bag, this is a fantastic event and well worth the journey.

Bath 2 Tunnels Half Marathon – Sunday 20 August
Eric and Jan did the ‘Bath 2 tunnels’ half marathon. Quite a scenic route around Bath and back through the city, mainly flat. Lots of feeding stations! A set of medals that interlock [if you have done all the races]. Weather was good for the run, rain held off till mid-afternoon. Times were; Jan 2:02:54, Eric 2:02:50

Jurassic Coast 10k – Saturday 26 August
Carly was a lone Coaster at the popular Jurassic Coast 10k at Budleigh Salterton in very warm conditions. Carly was among around 300 other runners who took part in this tough of-road 10k event which runs along the East Devon coast path and along the beautiful River Otter, Carly finished  in 1:03:45. Carly was the only runner in this Coasters sponsored event, hope a few more turn up for the next Coasters sponsored event the Templer Ten in November


Big Day Out – Great Escape Saturday 26 August
Also on Saturday Simon was a lone Coaster at the ‘Great Escape’ Half Marathon on Dartmoor, this off-road event starts at Princetown and finishes in South Brent, runners were treated to stunning views and some tough climbs over peat hills with very soft going in places through the famous Dartmoor bogs, running past places such as Erme Pits, Nuns Cross, Plym Head and the Avon Dam. Simon finished this tough event in 2:13. All runners received a lovely medal and a bottle of Dartmoor legend Ale

Dartmouth Regatta Run – Saturday 26 August
Ross took part in years 5.1 mile event along with 156 other runners, Ross completed the course in a time of 38:08

Lustleigh Show 10k – Monday 28 August

Larraine and Tryl at Lustleigh Show for the annual 10k, Larraine did 1:02:24 and Tryl 1:19:18
